Gubinge / Billygoat Plum / Murunga / Kakadu Plum - all names for an Australian Native bush food eaten for millennia by Aboriginal people in Australia’s tropical Northern Territory and West. This slightly salty, tangy, sour-tasting superfruit usually eaten raw, has won the first place of richest known natural source of Vitamin C. We love to eat it raw and as a special treat, made into a jam.
According to research presented at the International Congress of Nutrition in Adelaide, SA Oct 1993, Vitamin C makes up 5 per cent of the weight of the Billygoat Plum, Terminalia ferdiandiana. This is 100 times the concentration in oranges and five times that found in the Hawaiian cherry, the next richest natural source of vitamin C. Having higher levels of naturally occurring, easily bioavailable Vitamin C than found in Blueberries and Peruvian Camu Camu.
The Kakadu Plum has many unique properties high in specific compounds such as gallic acid (amongst many other benefits, helps to keep our fibres smooth flexible) and ellagic acid ( helps to reduce oxidative stress). The Kakadu fruit is naturally antibacterial and has traditionally been used as medicine, taken on "Walkabout" and long hunting trips to support diet and strength by Digenous people of Australia. There was no such thing as Vitamin C deficiency such as occurred on the long sea voyages with the suffering with Scurvy.
The trees grow in some of the harshest Australian bush lands, forcing the tree to develop an ability to survive in difficult conditions. In nature, difficult conditions often result in uniquely high concentrations of nutrients or specific properties developing. A "survival of the fittest" evolution has made this tiny fruit a super-fruit!

"Kakadu plum fruits were found to contain very high levels of polyphenolic com- pounds, mainly ellagic acid (EA) and gallic acid. Eshetu et al. reported in 2020 that Kakadu plums can still maintain a high level of ellagic acid content (46.6 mg/g) in freeze-dried form [16]. The content of gallic acid is 5.10 ± 0.03 mg/g DW, which is much higher than that of lemons, oranges, and blueberries [17]. A study by Williams et al. (2014) showed that the ellagic acid content of the Kakadu plum (880.9 mg/100 g) was significantly higher than that of boysenberry (166.4 mg/100 g) on a dry weight basis, even though boysen- berry is known to be an ellagic-acid-rich natural fruit [12]. In addition, ellagic acid has also been reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-aging properties, as well as improving symptoms such as Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases [18,19]. These compounds, like ascorbic acid, also have very high antioxidant properties and can reduce the risk of many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and rheumatoid arthritis [12,20]."
Vitamin C is an essential nutrient needed to repair cells, wound healing and to maintain our immune system function. Its help in balancing our enzyme production of neurotransmitters - important chemical messengers needed by our nerve cells and is a vital part of pathways responsible in forming of serotonin and melatonin, neurotransmitters important for prevention of sleep and mood disorders.
Oxidative stress whilst a natural occurrence in our body and systems, can dominate when we are exposed to environmental stresses and are overly acidic. Diet - sugar, coffee, chocolate, meat, dairy, processed foods and mentally - stress, anxiety can all build excess acidity. And the effects of pollution, radiation and blue light from electronic devices eg phones, tablets, computers, UV rays, and again stress, anxiety, deplete us of the essential minerals and vitamins needed to balance the effects of oxidation.
Antioxidant Vitamin C balances the biologically ageing effects and protects us from the ravages of oxidation. Thereby a regular daily uptake of Vitamin C is important in preventing disease, reducing the impact of stress and slowing the ageing process. We need Vitamin C for healthy gums and to produce Collagen, a protein found everywhere throughout our bodies in bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles, blood vessels, eyes, teeth, hair and skin.
Collagen, along with Elastin and soft Keratin, are responsible for skin strength and elasticity. Breakdown in the structure of Collagen matrix, leads to wrinkles and sagging skin. Strawberries, blueberries, cranberries and Kakadu plum as a potent source of Vitamin C are all found in Mayella Acai Berry Beautiful Antioxidant Blend. Rosehips & Hibiscus are also deliciously abundant sources of natural Vitamin C.
Rosehips & Kakadu Plum along with a multitude of bio-actively aligned ingredients can be found in Mayella Sunshine & Hemp Protein Blend. Did you know that Vitamin C is also responsible for protein metabolism!

Vitamin C is not only essential for healthy collagen formation and structure, affecting bones, joints, skin, eyes, blood vessels, plus regeneration such as wound healing, Vitamin C is a part of pathways responsible in forming of serotonin and melatonin, neurotransmitters important for prevention of sleep and mood disorders and responsible for protein metabolism.
Melatonin is natural neurotransmitter secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin has diverse functions that regulate the circadian rhythm, energy metabolism, and the immune system; it also inhibits oxidative stress and participates in the ageing process.

Over the past month or so I've been getting into the habit of starting everyday with green powder mixed with lemon juice + water 🌿🍋 greens are so nutrient dense but I go through phases where I struggle to eat as many as I probably should so backing it up with this is such a good option 🌿
I use @mayellaorganicsAlkalise Green & Go powder which contains alfalfa, barley grass, chlorella, kelp, Hawaiian spirulina, lemon and ginger ✨
I used to just use these powders when I would make a green smoothie but with it being winter in Aus right now, I haven't been drinking as many smoothies and I felt like I was missing out on an added nutrient boost. I was inspired to start drinking it like this when I watched a video by Caitlin of @frommybowl where she made something similar with various green powders and 0 sweeteners or things to disguise the flavour. I never thought I'd be able to do it but she was so casual about it that I thought I'd better give it a shot and to my surprise, it doesn't taste like a pond at all 😛 definitely an acquired taste but not as bad as I ever thought and after being fairly consistent with this, I've started to enjoy it for how refreshing it is! 🌿 Alex B - S.A Australia
Recipe - Quick and easy Green Juice: Add 1 teaspoon of Mayella Organic Nutritional Blend to a glass of water and stir in well. Done, drink and enjoy!
Tip: to vary your green juice base and try using coconut water (no added sugars is best), unfiltered organic apple or pear juice (not reconstituted). Or simply blend Mayella Organic Nutritional Blend in with watermelon and fresh mint leaves if you want to get adventurous - so refreshing!
